The next morning came quicker than expected.
I don’t know how long I had slept, but it wasn't long enough.
I groaned and opened my eyes, my lids heavy with fatigue.
Ramona’s offer had been swimming in my head the whole night.
I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
3 days in Las Vegas, all expenses paid.
I would be able to pay off mom's debt and finally be able to get me and my sisters out of our dingy apartment and into a decent neighborhood.
"Ugh."
I groaned, sat up, and pushed my hair out of my face.
It was past 9:00 AM.
The house was silent, so my sisters must have already left.
I got up and went to the bathroom, took a shower, and changed.
I grabbed my bag and keys and headed for the door, I wanted to see Marge and ask her opinion on this job.
It was a big opportunity… but I was still having second thoughts about it.
As I walked out of the apartment and into the busy streets of the city, my phone vibrated in my pocket.
I fished it out, and saw that it was from the hospital.
“Hello.” I quickly picked it up.
"Hi Zoe. It’s Nurse Nancy.” She replied.
“Is everything ok with my mum?” I asked, terrified.
"Well…. It’s better you come in. The doctor wants to talk to you." Nurse Nancy
"I'm on my way." I replied.
I hung up, hailed a taxi, and told the driver to go straight to the hospital.
My heart was beating rapidly, and I was praying everything was ok.
"Zoe." Dr. Brown greeted as soon as I walked into his office.
"How's my mom? Is she ok?" I asked frantically.
"Take a seat." Dr Brown gestured to the seat beside me.
"Is there something wrong?" I asked, struggling to remain calm.
"You see Zoe, I have some news for you. Good news and bad news." He said.
"Ok. Tell me. Just tell me, please." I begged.
"The good news is that your mum is miraculously out of coma and she's awake."
I stared at him, not quite believing what he had just said.
"Did you hear what I just said, Zoe? Your mother is out of coma." Mr Brown repeated.
"What?" I yelled. "She's awake."
I covered my mouth with my hand and tears sprung to my eyes.
"Mom's awake. Is she ok? Can I see her?" I pleaded.
"Yes, she's ok. Her condition has stabilized. She's asking for you and your sisters. Go and see her, and then come and find me." Mr Brown said to me.
"Thank you so much, Doctor." I rose to my feet to leave, but I remembered he had mentioned bad news as well.
"What's the bad news?" I asked, fearfully.
Dr. Brown took a deep breath and leaned forward.
"The bad news is that the traumatic injury to your mother's brain has caused a permanent and severe brain damage.” He spoke.
“Wha—-What … What do you mean doctor?…..” I stammered.
“ She’s awake right? That means she’s ok. Doesn't it? Isn't that a good sign, doctor? Isn't it?" I snuffled.
"Sit down, Zoe." Mr Brown whispered.
I sat down slowly, watching him, tears streaming down my face.
"When a person wakes up from a coma, it doesn't mean they're ok. Most people recover a little bit. However, it's not a complete recovery. In your mother's case, she has some impairments.
She's unable to speak or walk, and she's probably unable to remember anything from the past, or who she is, or who her family members are. It's very important for her to get the emotional support and help from her family, friends, and loved ones." He explained.
"But—But she will recover right?" I asked, my voice trembling.
"It's hard to say, Zoe. The brain is a complicated thing. We have no way of knowing for sure. But she will need extra care, and will have to undergo a lot of physical therapy. The bills are going to be a lot. Are you prepared to handle all that?” He asked.
I was quiet.
I had no idea what to say.
Was I ever prepared for any of this?
"I will be there for her." I finally whispered.
"Good." Dr. Brown nodded.
"You can go and see her now. Remember she doesn’t remember anything, so it might be hard to accept the reality of her situation. Be patient and supportive. I'll have one of the nurses come and check on you in a bit."
"Thank you, doctor." I smiled at him.
I turned and walked out of his office, a whirlwind of emotions inside me.
I wiped away the tears, and went to see my mum.
The door to my mother's room was slightly ajar, so I pushed it open and stepped inside.
My mom was awake, staring at the window, and she didn't notice when I walked in.
I stood in the corner of the room and watched her.
She had always been a thin, fragile woman, but now she looked even smaller and frailer.
She didn't seem to notice me standing there, and after a few minutes, I walked over to her bed.
"Mom?" I said. "Mum?"
She slowly turned and looked at me, her eyes vacant and cold.
She didn’t say a way… Well she couldn’t. She just looked at me with confusion.
"Hi Mom." I said again.
She continued staring at me, like she was trying to figure out who I was.
"It's me, Zoe." I whimpered.
Tears sprang to my eyes.
This was harder than I thought.
"Remember? I'm your daughter. Your first child. Your little Zoe. Your baby." I cried.
"Do you remember me, mom?" I asked, my voice shaking.
"I'm here." I whispered, placing my hand over hers.
She just stared at me, and the tears rolled down my cheeks.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and squeezed her hand.
I couldn’t stop myself from crying.
This was my mum.
I had known her since the day I was born.
This woman, who was lying on the bed, was my mother.
The woman who had given me life.
"You don't know who I am. Do you, mom?" I sobbed.
"Zoe, sweetheart." Nurse Nancy said and placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Go easy on her. She can’t speak or walk. But she can hear, see and feel. So she can understand. It might take a while for her to learn and remember things, but she will get there eventually. You just have to be patient." Nancy stated.
“What if she doesn’t. Dr. Brown said she may never recover fully, or ever be able to remember us or who she is." I said to Nancy.
“What if…” I burst out into tears, and buried my face in my hands.
I felt a strong arm around me, and when I looked up, it was Nancy, pulling me in for a hug.
"Come on, dear, let's get you out of here.”
