Alice's POV

Alexander wasn't joking when he described Madison as talkative.

She hasn't stopped talking since Alex left us.

I don't hate it, but it does take time to truly get to know someone.

She has shared with me everything about their childhood, even though Alex had already told me most of it.

In the few hours I've spent talking with Maddie, I've learned a few things about her.

Firstly, she had a huge crush on the first son of the Spanish Màfia. Secondly, she deeply loves her brother and would do anything to help or protect him. Thirdly, she had numerous argúments with their father regarding his mistreàtment of Alexander, which led her to leàve the country to escàpe her contrólling father. Fourthly, she loves shopping. And finally, she still has doubts about Alex and me not being in a relationship.

"There's nothing you can say that will make me believe that you and my brother aren't dating," she said once again, repeating herself for the umpteenth time. "I mean, come on. He said you're his," Maddie groaned, frustration evident as she ran her fingers through her shoulder-length hair.

"I don't remember hearing him say that."

"Yeah, that's because he said it in Italian," she replied, trying to offer an explanation. Maddie's skepticism remained, and she continued to shake her head. "I know Alexander, he wouldn't just let any girl stay at his house."

"He doesn't even want me here. He's like that, he doesn't like company," she explained, hoping to clarify the situation. Maddie looked at me with an appreciative smile on her pretty face. "You're very beautiful, and I'm thankful to God that you're in his life," she said, her words filled with gratitude. I returned her smile, glad to see her happy."But seriously, how did you manage to put up with him?" she asked, genuinely curious.

"Hmm," I pondered, playfully stroking my jaw. "Let's just say that after being threatenéd so many times, I became accustomed to it and decided to confrónt him." I shared with her, and she grinned in response. "Although, he had his own reasons for wanting to talk to me. He's going through a rebéllious phase, and I must say, he's doing it quite well."

"What?!" she exclaimed, her mouth agape. "He's finally standing up for himself? Wow, I'm so proud of him."

"Me too," I added. "But when do you plan on telling your crush that you like him?"

"How about never? My dad would literally kíll me. He loves me, but he would never allow me to have anything to do with the Spanish Màfia," she replied, shaking her head sadly and disappointedly. "He hatés the Spanish just as much as he hatés the Mexicans."

"Why?" I asked, curious. "What happened?"

"No, what am I even saying?" she laughed, dismissing her words with a wave of her hand. "His hàtred for the Mexican Màfia is far greater than his hatréd for the Spanish Mafía."

"Why? What happened?" I inquired further. "Do you think something happened to cause this animósity?"

"I have no idea Alice," she replied with a sigh, "And I don't care. I just feel sorry for myself. I won't be able to tell my crush my true feelings."

"My handsome crush," she added, with a mischievous smile.

"Is he as handsome as Alexander?" Knowing her playful nature, I responded, "I know you're teasing me about my feelings for your brother."

She placed her hand on my shoulder and pulled me into a hug. "Don't worry, sister-in-law, I'll let you marry my younger brother."

I felt a mix of emotions.

While I do have feelings for Alex, they are not as intense as she suggests. We are good friends, nothing more.

In fact, I've been contemplating letting go of my infatuation for him. Yes, he possesses many attractive qualities - he's fun, cute, handsome, hot, nice, and even speaks Italian.

But wait! Did she just call me what I think she did?

"Sister-in-law?" I repeated, taken aback, and she nodded. "I will soon be an aunt," she said, grinning like a Cheshire cat.

"Slow down there, missy," I said, raising an eyebrow. "Alex..."

"What  are you two saying about me?" I heard Alex's voice and turned to see him leaning on the doorframe, wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants. His hair was slightly wet.

Well, forget about what I said earlier, because I am definitely not getting rid of these feelings I have for this incredible man standing before me. He looked at me quizzically, and I shrugged. He gave me a skeptical look, to which I burst out laughing.

"You know there's something called an air dryer?" Madison threw at him rhetorically, and he rolled his eyes in response. "Childish," she muttered.

"It's not childish," I defended him, getting up from the bed and walking towards him. Standing on my tiptoes, I stood close to him, running my fingers through his wet hair. "I love your hair when it's wet," I admitted. Our eyes locked and stayed locked for a few seconds, the first time since he got back home.

He gave me one of his heart-racing smiles, removing the scrunchie from my messy bun, allowing my hair to fall over my back. "And I love yours when it's let down," he whispers softly into my ear, drawing me nearer with his hands gently resting on my waist.

Does he know the effect this simple gesture has on me? Does he understand the rapid acceleration of my heartbeat whenever he does this? Does he realize the intensity of my desire for his lips to meet mine in these intimate moments?

It seems evident that he does, as I struggle to conceal my feelings any longer.

The presence of another person momentarily slips my mind until I hear a giggle, causing me to glance at Maddie, who wears an enormous grin.

"I knew there was something between you two," she remarks. I attempt to dismiss her assumption, but Alex tightens his hold on me, pulling me closer. "I may not fully comprehend the situation, but I'm loving it," she says.

Alex's inquiry about Maddie's departure lacks politeness. "When are you leaving?" he asks, a touch of rudeness in his tone.

Maddie remains unfazed, smirking as she rises from her seat and approaches us. "The day after tomorrow. I have a date with Alice tomorrow," she reveals.

Yeah, the "date" she wants me to go on is actually just her dragging me along.

She wants to go shopping before heading to their father's house. I agreed to go with her, but I haven't asked Alex yet. Alex and I have gone out several times during my two months here, but I always had to convince him because he needs some fun in his life. I don't think he'll appreciate me going with just Maddie, as he's worried about what his father might do to me.

"What?" he snapped, giving Madison a cold stare.

"Please listen, I..."

"Calm down," she interrupted, pulling me away from Alex's grip, which I really didn't appreciate. "I'm not foolish enough to go alone, I'll bring some guards."

"You better," Alex said firmly, piercing her with a stern gaze. "If anything happens to Alice, I swear I will never forgive you."

"I'm not a child, Alexander," I said, crossing my arms. He shifted his cold glare from his sister to me. His gaze softened as he looked at me with something else in his eyes.

His glare vanished as he looked at me with warmth in his beautiful gray eyes.

"I can take care of myself."

"I know that, but you're not familiar with my world, so let me take care of you, please. Lunch is almost ready," he added before leaving the room.

Madison immediately turned me to face her and asked, "Now tell me the truth, do you like my brother?"

"Yes, of course. He is my friend," I replied.

"No, not just as a friend," she insisted, holding my hands. "Do you love my brother?"

I hesitated, unsure of how to respond.

Before I could answer, she stopped me and gave me a supportive smile. "Let's have lunch, I'm starving."

Although she prevented me from answering her question, I couldn't stop my thoughts from wandering and considering the possibility of loving Alexander Romano, a member of the Italian Mafía.

I knew I had to convince myself that Alex and I were never meant to be.

It is just not possible.
