CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

I stared at Marge. Her question haunted me.

Who was Mr X?

She was asking me to tell her everything that happened during the trip.

I didn’t know what to do.

Was I going to tell her the truth? No. I couldn’t. I was too scared.

Marge warned me not to f+ck Master and I did. I wondered what she will do if I tell her I was in love with him.

"Zoey?" She asked.

I didn't know what to say.

My mum was dying and all I could think about was how much of a fool I was.

What the hell was wrong with me?

I shook my head.

"I don't want to talk about it." I said, and looked away.

I didn't want to face her. I just couldn’t do it now.  I would tell her after my mum was out of danger.

Marge frowned.

"Are you sure?" She asked.

"Yeah." I said, and took a sip of my coffee.

"Ok." Marge replied. “I’m not going to pressure you but we are going to have a long talk when all this is over. Deal?" She added.

"Deal." I agreed.

I rested my head back on her shoulder and sighed.

"Have the doctors said anything? Is mum going to be ok?" I asked.

"They are still in the emergency room. We haven't gotten any updates yet. I’m sorry." Marge replied.

I felt like crying again. This was not happening.

"Hey. Hey. Hey. Stay strong. Your mum needs you." Marge said.

She took my face and stared into my eyes.

"I know this is hard but you are strong. You have a good heart and you're a great daughter. So, don’t ever forget that." Marge said.

I nodded and she gave me a kiss on my forehead.

***************************************

It took about an hour before a doctor walked into the waiting room.

We all stood up and waited anxiously for him to speak.

"Ms Zoey." He called.

"Yes. That's me." I said.

My palms were sweaty and my heart was racing.

“Can you follow me to my office?" He asked.

"What about our mum?" Penelope asked.

The doctor looked at her.

"Your mother is going to be ok." He said.

My sisters and I breathed in relief.

"She suffered a heart attack but is stable now. However, she still needs to remain in the ICU for a few days. We want to keep her under constant supervision." He explained.

“Ohhhh” My sisters turned to look at me.

They did not understand a word the doctor was saying.

"What does that mean?" Victoria asked.

"That mum is going to be ok and is getting better." Marge replied, and pulled them into a hug.

I walked over and thanked the doctor.

"Thank you so much, doctor.” I said to him but he just shook his head.

"Don’t thank me yet, Zoe.” The doctor said.

He gestured for me to follow him.

I turned to Marge and told her that I would be back.

She gave me a reassuring smile.

"Go ahead. We will be here." She replied.

"Thank you." I said.

I followed the doctor to his office and sat down. He didn't say a word.

"Why am I here, doctor?" I asked, breaking the silence.

The doctor looked at me and cleared his throat.

"Miss Zoe. Yes, your mum is stable but you know her medical history. She just woke up from the coma some days ago and now she suffered a heart attack. Things are not looking well." He said.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"Well, she has a very weak body and she needs more care an attention. Extra supervision." He said.

"Ok." I replied.

Then he paused.

"The thing is, we are not sure how long she can stay at the hospital." He said.

I frowned.

"Why not?" I asked.

"It's getting very expensive. And you are owing the hospital a lot of money." He explained.

I bit down on my lip.

“I know Dr Brown has been kind enough to let your debt go but the bills are getting too high. We cannot just keep your mother here for free. If things continue like this, we might have to let her go." He said.

My heart stopped….or I felt like it did.

"What! But she is a patient? You can’t just stop attending to her." I replied.

My heart began to race and my hands were shaking.

"We can, because you owe us a lot of money. There are no funds to take care of your mum. This is not a charity organization. This is a hospital." He replied.

He didn't look apologetic or sad. In fact, he seemed angry.

"There has to be a way." I pleaded.

"I'm sorry but there is nothing we can do.” He said. “If your debts aren’t paid in full by next week, we are letting her go."

The doctor's words left a gaping hole in my chest. This couldn't be happening.

My mum. What the hell was I going to do about my mum?

I did not have any money left. Oh my God.

This was a nightmare.

A terrible, horrible nightmare.

******************************************

“What did the doctor say?” Marge asked me as soon as I got out of the office.

She dragged me to a corner to avoid my sisters seeing me in a bad state.

I looked at her. My eyes were wet and I was trying my hardest not to cry.

"Zoe. What's wrong?" Marge asked.

"The hospital is going to kick my mum out if the bills are not paid by next week." I said.

Marge looked surprised.

"What! No. That's impossible. This is a hospital. How can they just kick a patient out?" She asked.

"I owe them a lot of money, Marge and we don’t have health insurance. And with the bills from the coma, we don’t have enough. I have no idea what I'm going to do." I explained.

Marge shook her head and took a step back.

“That’s ok. I mean, you made $100,000 at the bachelor party. We can go to Ramona right now to get the money. I’m sure whatever you owe, the money can cover it and there will still be a lot left. Right? Isn’t that the reason you went to Las Vegas in the first place? To get the money?" Marge said.

Her words stung and I didn't know what to say. I bowed my head down and looked away.

Marge frowned.

"What? Is something wrong?" She asked.

"Marge...." I started.

"What happened at the party, Zoe?” She asked again.

When I didn’t respond, she shook her head and placed her hands on her hips.

"Look. Zoe. You have to tell me the truth. There’s no way I can help if you keep hiding things from me." She said.

"You asked earlier who Mr X was and the truth is, it was Master." I replied.

Marge stared at me with a shocked expression.

"Master was your client? Are you kidding me, Zoe?" She yelled.

"Wait. I can explain." I said.

Marge turned around and walked a few feet away. Then, she stopped and faced me.

"Oh, please do." She said in anger.

"I promise you, Marge. I didn't know the client was him. I was as shocked as you were. Then he said he was going to have s+x with me for the 3 days. But I couldn’t do it. We had this huge argument and I….” I trailed off.

Marge began to pace back and forth.

"You couldn’t do it because you’re in love with him. Right?” She asked.

“I….I didn’t think he would ask me to have sex with me.” I stammered.

“You told me no one would demand for s+x at a bachelor party and I could decline if I wanted to.” I said.

“The only reason he asked is because you made stupid advances to him during your lessons and he noticed that you liked him. You literally threw yourself at him.

It was all so obvious, Zoe. And I warned you but did you listen. Now, you are in love with a man that is going to marry another woman. And he just asked you for a favor, and what did you do. You blew the opportunity away. You fucked everything up." Marge spat.

I couldn't believe what she was saying.

"That is not true." I replied.

"Isn’t it? Isn't that what happened?" She asked.

I didn't reply and she continued.

"I warned Zoe. I warned you from the start not to sleep with him. I warned you not to have feelings for him and I warned you to keep everything as professional as possible. But did you listen? No. You never listened." Marge yelled at me.

"I’m sorry, Marge. I didn’t mean to fall in love with him." I replied.

"What's done is done. We can't change the past." She said.

She leaned against the hospital wall and sighed.

“You know, Ramona is going to fire you for this. Right?” Marge said to me.

I nodded.

"Yes, I know." I said. “I have no money and no job.”

I could feel the tears coming.

"So what are you going to do?" Marge asked.

I wiped my tears.

"What choice do I have?” I asked. “I’ve ruined everything. My life is a complete mess. And it’s all Master’s fault.”
