Dominic ~

They say that when you're moments away from déath, your life flashes before your eyes.

I never believed it—not once. Until today, when an overwhelming ache pierced my chest, splitting my heart in two at the news that a truck was tailing Genevieve.

Genevieve King—the very person I had entered her life to destróy—was now the source of a pànic that sent my heart racing. They warn you not to play with fire, but I've never been one to heed such warnings. I break the rules instead of following them.

I should have listened to those warning signs that screamed for me to stay away. I shouldn't have allowed her to become so integral to my life that letting go felt impossible. It was a slow, gradual process, but she wove herself into my existence, and I cherished every moment.

Yet now, her life was in jeopardy because of me. Genevieve King was the very firé I had been cautioned against, but rather than keeping my distance, I had embraced the flames, ignoring the excruciating búrn until it was far too late.

I should have known better than to drown in those tumultuous ocean-blue eyes. They were a treachérous, uncharted territory, and I had willingly walked into their depths. I shouldn't have fallen for her smiles, or the giggles she let escape when she read, or the infectious grin that lit her face when we talked.

And I definitely shouldn't have let my heart grow fond of her. But it’s never too late to teach a lesson to those who deserve it. There are certain rules in life, and one of them is never to incur the wrath of Dominic Morozov.

No one touches what is mine. Not my sister. Not my business. And certainly not Genevieve King. Because when they do, they’re inviting a reckoning they won't survive.

"I got it." Echo's voice sliced through the fog of my thoughts, sharp and clear.

When she said she got it, she meant she had located where my Vixen was being held against her will. That meant I was about to érase some undesirables from the face of the earth.

Without glancing at her computer screen, I reached into my pocket to retrieve my phone. "Send it to me." In an instant, my phone dinged with a message notification. "Good job," I replied, my resolve hardening.

"Sure thing, Boss." Echo rose from her seat, a quizzical expression crossing her face. "Will she be okay?"

Despite the wave of dreàd crashing over my heart, I nodded stiffly. "I sure hope so."

In just a week since I brought Genevieve here, she and Echo had formed a close bond. Against the backdrop of mobstérs who had taken countless livés, she had found an unexpected peace.

That’s the unique thing about my Genevieve.

With a final nod, I exited my office, my strides quick and purposeful. By the time I reached the game room, my mobstérs were waiting for my orders.

I scanned the faces gathered there, finally locking onto my most trusted allies. "Sal, Dexter, Blàde—come with me."

It wasn’t that I didn’t trust the others; it’s just that these three had also earned Genevieve's trust. They were her closest circle here.

I could no longer tolerate waiting, so I dashed out and jumped into my car. A quick glance in the rearview mirror confirmed that they were piling into the vehicle behind me.

••

Without a care in the world, I sped through the streets, ignoring traffic lights and other cars. My only focus was bringing Genevieve back to me, safe and sound.

I had never been a believer in luck, but today was different. Today, I was finally able to put to use the tracker hidden in the handle of my trusted knífe. I had insisted she take it with her, knowing it would lead me straight to her.

The GPS on my phone indicated I was less than ten minutes away. The only vehicles on the unpaved road were mine and the one my men were in. It felt as if I was driving down a path leading to a place of no return.

The road wasn’t bumpy; it was dusty—too dusty, really, like a mini desert in the middle of nowhere. Well, somewhere, since I had the GPS to guide me.

It was foólish of the idióts who took my Vixen to bring her to a location that could be tracked so easily. Were they amateurs?

I found myself grateful for their stupidíty.

Ahead, a small cottage loomed, looking as though it could collapse at any moment with a strong gust of wind. That was the place where those bastàrds were holding my Genevieve captive.

I pulled to a stop and stepped out of my car, my gaze landing on one of the moróns who was too busy smoking and drinking with headphones on to notice me. This would be an easy kíll, but I wanted to savor this moment.

I pulled my gún from my pocket and approached him. The instant our eyes met, it was too late for him to react. I shót him square between the eyes, watching the flicker of fear vanish from his gaze in an instant.

With one obstacle removed, I wasted no time bursting through the door, throwing it open with enough force to damage the hinges. But I couldn’t care less about that. My focus was solely on the whirlwind that awaited me inside.

My eyes locked onto Genevieve’s, and it felt like the world had stopped spinning. It was as if we were the only two people in existence, her smile illuminating the room. My feet, driven by instinct, rushed toward her.

I towered over her as I cradled her face in my hands, my heart aching. "Are you okay? Did they húrt you?"

"I’m fine," she replied, but I didn’t believe her.

I took her hands in mine, letting my gaze sweep over her for any signs of bruisiñg or injúry. When I found nothing, a wave of relief washed over me, and I pulled her tightly against my chest, wrapping my arms around her as I savored the moment of having her back in my embrace.

She is fine.

She is fine.

Though my mind repeated that mantra, my heart thudded violeñtly against my ribcage, as if it didn’t quite believe what my mind was telling it. A sharp sting of pàin pricked at my eyes when I closed them, but when I opened them, something unexpected happened.

Tears began to fall onto Genevieve’s skin. My tears. I was crying. For the first time since witnessing the murdér of my parents and cradling their lifeléss bodies in my small hands, I was actually crying.

A soft whimper escaped my lips as I sniffled, causing Genevieve to pull back, her eyes searching my face. Her lips parted in surprise.

"You..." Her gaze lingered on me, but the words she wanted to say seemed to falter. Then, she let go of the guñ I hadn’t even noticed she was holding and cradled my face in her hands. "Dominic, I’m fine."

As if triggeréd by her words, more tears streamed down my cheeks. I couldn't hold back; they overflowed, especially as she looked at me with such unwavering admiration.

Why can’t she just hàte me?

I was the reason she had been kidnappéd, and yet here she was, gazing at me like that.

My heart ached despite her being safely in my arms, and I couldn’t understand why. I could only let the tears flow as I took in the sight of her, knowing she was alive and not lost to me.

Then it hit me: I was terrified of losing Genevieve. The thought that one day, I might wake up without her in my life was paralyzing. The realization sent fresh waves of tears cascading down my face as I tightened my grip around her waist.

"I thought I would lose you. I had terrible thoughts running through my head, imagining I’d arrive here and find you lying in a pool of your own bloód. Genevieve, I was so scared I wouldn’t hear your voice again." The words spilled out, as uncontrollable as my tears. The sight of my anguish seemed to affect her too; I noticed her eyes glistening with tears. "I thought I’d never see your smile again, never look into your eyes again. I’m so sorry, Vixen. I’m so sorry. It’s because of me that you were—"

"Shhh," Genevieve murmured, her thumb brushing away the tears on my cheeks. "You know, I’m angry that you underestimated me."

"What?" I asked, confusion swirling in my mind.

She sniffled, then tilted her head toward the other side of the room. Reluctantly, I shifted my attention away from her to see what she was indicating, and I wasn’t prepared for the sight that greeted me.

One of the foóls lay motionless in a pool of his own bloód. Wait—is that my knífe lodged in his chest?

Genevieve nodded as if reading my thoughts and continued to astonish me. "Yes. He was being an annoying àsshole, so he had to go. Can you believe he made me miss my literature class?" When I gave her a blank, bewildered stare, she huffed. "I love literature."

Oh, I know.

But how could she think about that while she was literally kidnappéd?

The more pressing question was, why the héll wasn't she fazed by all this blóod?

"Do you love your life?" I asked, trying to understand her perspective.

"Yeah," she replied softly. "When you’re in it."

I felt the same way.

But I didn’t say that. Instead, I simply stared at her, lost in her eyes as she stared back at me.

Genevieve finished wiping the tears from my face and ran her fingers through my hair, instantly calming me. "You’re never going to lose me, Dominic. I promise. You’re stuck with me for life, whether you like it or not."

Did I need that reassurance when I was hiding a big secret from her? No.

Did I appreciate it? Absolutely.

"That sounds like a punishmént I’d love."

"You better," Genevieve playfully snapped, flashing a smile before pulling me in for a kiss.
