THE K1LLER'S KNIFE

The K1ller's Knife - Episode 10

By Amah's Heart

" Doctor Stanley I believe all hope is not lost yet. I think there's something else that can be done to save my sister's life and that is...." I began saying what was on my mind but the weird look on doctor Stanley and mother's face was making me feel anxious and nervous

I swallowed the saliva that remained stuck in my throat to ease my nervousness as I continued regardless

"...by testing me to see if my bl00d is compatible with hers...if it is the same with Erica's blood type....then my bl00d can be used instead of my father's own" I said as a suggestion hoping that I made sense at least

Doctor Stanley looked thoughtfully at me and after a while, he nodded in smiles probably wondering where such an idea popped out from.

Whilst Mother's face lighted up for the first time since we came into the office

" You're a really smart kid Jacob...how old are you...?" Doctor Stanley asked probably feeling impressive

" I'm 14 years old Sir" I answered plainly  and doctor Stanley's smiles faded slowly

" You are quite young Jacob. Even if you are tested and found to be compatible...I don't think a bløød donation is advisable for a child of your age..."

As doctor Stanley said these words, mother's face became gloomy again and I felt helpless as well

" I am willing to take the risk doctor. I want to help my sister...please don't deprive me of such a privilege please doctor Stanley. I'm a strong boy...I believe I'll come out hale and hearty" I said with my voice laced with emotions

Doctor Stanley thought for a while and then he exhaled heavily. He looked from my sympathetic face to mother's face

" What's your take on this ma'am...? Should we do what your son has suggested...?" He asked mother calmly

Mother stared at me intently and she spoke to me with a love filled voice

" Jacob I know you love your sister. I love her too and want her alive but I don't want you to take such a huge risk that might endanger your life. Like the doctor said...you're too young for a bløød donation. I don't want to lose you"

I stood up from my chair and walked over to where mother sat.

I squatted and gently took her hands into mine as I looked at her reassuringly

" My mind is made up mother. I want to get tested and if our bløød is compatible then I'm willing to donate my bløød to save Erica. Please mother let me do this" I said squeezing mother's hands softly. I was scared no doubt but I have to be a strong senior brother for my sister.

Mother nodded in approval as she kept saying repeatedly with tears in her eyes

" Thank you so much Jacob. Thank you so much..this is...this is..huge. Thank you for doing this for your sister and me"

I could see the tenderness and relief on her face. I could see a mother who was willing to do anything for her children no matter the circumstance.

Then I understood why mother did what she did yesterday. It must have all been in an attempt to protect me from getting punished by father.

Doctor Stanley called on a slim nurse who took me to the laboratory to get my bløød sample tested.

In the laboratory, as the syringe pierced through my arm to get my bløød for testing, my fear kept increasing

To make matters worse, mother wasn't here with me so I was all alone except for the medical practitioners in the lab

My heartbeats kept on accelerating and I almost backed out but as I remembered that Erica's life was on the line, I tried my best to bury my fear

I was mumbling to myself that 'I could do this Jacob' and this personal soothing words helped me pull through

Finally, the nurse was done taking my bløød and a cotton wool was used to dab the area the syringe pierced

" You can go wait in the waiting hall. In the next thirty minutes...your results should be ready...and afterwards you'll be called to the doctor's office for his analysis" the slim nurse which I later got to know as Nancy politely said to me

Without saying a word, I just nodded as I quietly stood up and walked out of the laboratory to the waiting room.

I saw that Mother was already sitting on one of the long benches, so I moved to her side of the bench and sat beside her.

The silence that existed between us was deafening. We were both lost in our individual thoughts and none of us was ready to break the silence

It was mother who later did and her question actually threw me off balance as I didn't see it coming

" Why did you do it Jacob...?"

" I...I.. mother...the thing is....I didn't know what came over me. I was just angry at father for refusing to pay my school fees and that's why I decided to take his money. I'm so sorry mother!" I explained with all sincerity

" I know your father is not the best of them all but he is still your father Jacob. I don't condone stealing and I have warned you and your sisters against taking what doesn't belong to you..." Mother said firmly and paused to take a breath before continuing

My head was bent in regrets of what I did as I listened to her rebuke

"...now see the mess you caused yesterday...you almost got yourself into trouble and worst is that you made me lie against an innocent woman..."

I scoffed as I heard the last part of mother referring to Flora as an innocent woman when she's such a dev¡l in disguise.

I softened and freed my mind as I heard mother say after an afterthought

" I'm a mother Jacob...and I couldn't watch you get punished so my protective instincts made me cover you from getting caught. I'll forgive you for what happened yesterday and I will count it as one of your childish mistakes. But you have to promise me that you will never steal from your father again...promise me Jacob...?"

I nodded in affirmation as I replied from the depths of my heart

" I promise you mother that I will not steal from father again. Thank you mother for forgiving me...you're the best" I said smiling warmly and mother smiled back in her usual way.

" Excuse me.. please are you madam Felicia...?" A different nurse asked as soon as she walked near mother and I

" Yes I am. Any problem please..?" Mother asked standing up abruptly and I did same

" Not at all ma'am. The test result on your son is out and the doctor would like to see you in his office. Please excuse me" the nurse said and walked out on us leaving no room for us to ask any more questions.

Mother did not even wait for me before dashing to the hallway that the doctor's office was situated. I followed behind her and we arrived the office in no time

We knocked on the door and after we were permitted, we entered the office and took our seats frantically.

Doctor Stanley sat on the other side of the table with his eyes focused on a sheet of paper he held in his left hand

He shook his head pitifully and exhaled before slowly disclosing the analysis of the test result to Mother and I.

" From the bløød sample we took from Jacob..it shows that his bløød isn't compatible with that of the patient. I'm sorry ma'am and Jacob...but this goes further to say that you are not fit to donate bloody for your sister"

As we heard that, our faces dropped in utmost disappointment

All hopes is finally lost

So we are going to lose my sister...?

Oh no! I can't let this happen but I'm stuck.

Is there even a way out of this..?

My mind kept on roaming and then the worst happened as the door was forced open by father who was roaring in fury

" How dare you!!!!" Father uttered as he bursted into the doctor's office

I melted completely as I wished the ground would open up and swallow me.

Not here please.

Oh! I'm so finished for sure!
