LOST IN A SHADOW
Lost in a Shadow - Episode 28

Written by Chidiogor D-f Nwafor

"Dave! My God! Come in, please."

As Dave walked in, he marvelled at the beauty of the office. He wondered who it was that was sponsoring her. Amanda asked him to have a seat and he accepted it. She looked uneasy and Dave sensed it. He smiled at her hoping it would at least calm her down. It actually did for she smiled back and took a seat. She had been standing all along.
"I..." They both started together. This made them laugh as they tried again, only for the same thing to happen.
"You first." Dave gestured her to speak.
"I'm glad  you came." She smiled at him and Dave nodded.
Amanda asked him to make himself comfortable while she got a chilled drink for him but Dave declined quietly.
"I've been thinking about this for a long time now. Actually, I've been thinking about it before you came into the picture." Dave chuckled. "Well, I decided to see you because I want to hear your own side of the story. I guess this is the right thing to do."
"Thank you so such Dave for coming. When you left, I lost every hope of seeing you again. I'll tell you everything you need to know right from when I left down to now. I won't mince words, you're free to judge me for I am also ashamed of myself. Before I begin, I'd like to apologise once again. I'm really sorry for leaving you at such tender age but I wasn't happy with your father. I felt he wasn't treating me the way I should be treated. I had friends whose husbands spent money on them and I wanted the same treatment. Then this guy came walking by while I shopped. He was so kind and sweet. He paid for everything I bought; things your father wouldn't buy. I fell in love with that guy instantly and we began to hang out. It got to a time I felt I should divorce Paul and when I brought it up to him, he dismissed it. Questions like what could Paul offer me if I stayed with him flooded my mind and so I decided to leave since Paul wouldn't grant me the divorce I asked for. I was very happy with Steve and I felt he was going to marry me for he never knew about my marital affairs. I had plans of coming for you after I've settled with Steve. I thought I had everything figured out but Steve didn't share my thoughts. I discovered I was pregnant and I was so happy. I thought Steve would be happy too but that jerk denied the child. He called me lot of dirty names  but I wasn't as hurt as the last thing he told me." Amanda shook her head, remembering the incident.

"What did he tell you?" Dave asked, totally interested.
"He said he came to Nigeria on a business deal and so he would be going back soon to his wife and two kids. He only wanted to have fun and I was available. He used me for sexual gratification Dave. After that talk with Steve, I didn't see him again; till now. After I found out I had been used, I discovered how foolish I had been and how I had chosen material things. I went back to look for your father but I was informed he moved out. I went to the bank he worked and met with Jimoh. I don't know if you  remember him."
"I don't really remember him but I've heard about him."

Amanda nodded slowly. "He was your father's best friend. He used to carry you a lot." She smiled at the memory. "Well, I met him because of his close relationship with Paul but he refused to give me any clue about you guy's whereabout; no matter how I begged or cried. He was unmoved. I left the bank and searched fervently for Paul but to no avail. I went back to Jimoh; this time with a resolve not to leave until he told me something but the only thing he revealed was that you guys were in Port Harcourt. He didn't tell me the exact place, no matter my plea. Instead, he asked me to forget you two and get a life. I didn't listen for I was burning with regret and remorse. I moved to Port  Harcourt with hope to find you two but years passed without any sign of you two. I began to feel that Jimoh lied to me about your whereabout and I lost hope. I rented an apartment due to the money my father sent me on regular basis. It got to a time he stopped giving me money and when I called, he insulted me. I took a job at a petrol station. Due to its low payment, I left for another. I fell down and lost my baby when I had been working. It was such a tragic experience for me and I'd never forget that day in my life." Amanda dabbed her eyes.

"I wish I could turn back the hands of time. I would have done lot of things differently. I threw everything I had away. That saying__ you don't know what you want until you lost it__ was my issue. I didn't recognise the blessing I had being with Paul, I found out what I threw away after I left him. To be honest, now I think about it, I would have never been happy with Steve had he married me. He had mood swings and hot temper. Whenever he was angry, he threw things at the wall and scattered everywhere. He was the opposite of Paul, who only walked out whenever he was angry.  I know I was a fool and I know I'm not worthy to ask for your forgiveness; in fact, I don't deserve your presence or audience but please, can I beg of just one thing?"
"What is it?" Dave asked, with tears glistening on his eyelid.
"I'm not asking for you to take me back. All I'm asking for is for... I mean can I... Can I at least wave to you when I see you on the road? I know that it's too much to ask after all the pain I've inflicted on you. I know I have offended you but... Please, Dave, I... Please...." She  broke down in tears, weeping uncontrollably, in complete agony. She tried to control herself but she couldn't. Dave took her hands and rubbed it gently. She looked up at him and he smiled. Tears were on his cheeks also.

"I don't want you to wave to me on the road." He told her and her face fell as fresh tears rolled out. She tried to speak but all she could do was quiver.
"I want you to walk up to me and hug me... Mother?"

Amanda sobbed harder at that. She brought Dave's hands to her face as she wept. Dave couldn't hold back his tears and so he let it flow down his cheeks. After long minutes of crying, Dave wiped his nose and muttered, "I'm famished."

Amanda smiled at that. She told him to get up but Dave sat, bewildered.
"You're hungry right? I'm going to feed you."

Meanwhile, Stella had been pacing restlessly with her hands folded. She was uneasy. She wondered what was happening and what they were talking about. Peace kept asking her to calm down but she couldn't.
"Do you hear any punches or screams? It's been quiet all along meaning they are settling things amicably." Peace encouraged.

Just then, Dave and Amanda walked out together; holding each other's hands. Stella exchanged looks with Peace who had a smug look on her face.
"Where are you two going?" Stella asked.
"To feed my son. He's hungry." Amanda smiled at Dave and Dave smiled back.  "I'm leaving things in your hands." She pointed at both Peace and Stella.
"Yes ma." They chorused as they watched them go. Dave held the door for Amanda and they both drove out from the the compound.
"You were workikg yourself up for nothing." Peace told Stella.
"I'm glad they've buried the hatchet."
"I hope they don't dig it out later." They both laughed.
