Lost in a Shadow - Episode 27

Lost in a Shadow - Episode 27

Written by Chidiogor D-f Nwafor

"Are you siding her now because she's your boss? See baby, you don't know this  woman. She's just shedding crocodile tears." Dave blurted.
"No she's not! She isn't Dave. She's seriously in serious pain. I'm telling you what I found out. Dave! You've been avoiding her but you can't hide forever. What next now? Are you never going to accept her back? Can't you forgive her? Won't you see her as a person that made a mistake? You once told me that we humans are  prone to error. To err is man but to forgive is..."
"Is divine Stella. I know all these. I do. But this is not as easy as you make it sound. This woman abandoned me when I was still a child; when I needed her the most."
"I understand Dave. That's why I'll support you in whatsoever decision you make. You need to make your decision Dave."
"I know Stella but I'm scared."
"Scared of what Dave?"
"I'm scared that she'll leave again when I accept her back. What makes me so sure that she'd stay with me forever. I'm scared that she'll abandon me again when I feel she's back for good. I don't want to deceive myself Stella. If I'm to accept her back as my mother, I must be sure that she would never leave again. If she won't stay with me, then she should vanish from my sight. I don't want to taste how good it feels to be with one's mother only to be left once again. You wouldn't understand because you've always lived with your parents." Dave sighed.
"You're right Dave. I don't know how it feels like to be abandoned and as I said earlier, I'd support you in whatsoever decision you choose to make. Take care Dave. Don't stress yourself much over this issue. I'll come visit you later."
"Thank you Stella for your support. I love you."
"I love you too Dave." She ended the call.

For  the time being, Stella dreaded going to the boutique for she had to see Amanda each day. Seeing Amanda ignited feelings of anger and pity. She still couldn't believe that Amanda was the same woman who had made Dave grow up the way he did. Stella wished she could hear Amanda's side of the story. She felt there was a reason humans did whatever they did.

As Stella stood watching Imafidon and Ruth chat, she heard her name being called by Amanda. Feelings of dread and terror flooded her as she walked slowly to the office. Her legs had suddenly become reluctant to carry her.

Amanda asked her to take a seat immediately she got inside the office. Stella sat still, staring at the ground beneath her.
"Have you heard from Dave?" Amanda began.
"I called him of recent. "
"How is he doing? Is he alright?"
"Yes, he is." Stella stated flatly.

Amanda heaved a sigh of relief. "I've been so worried about him. I'm so glad he's okay."
"I know I'm not in the position to ask but... Why ma? Why did you do that to your family?"

Amanda sniffed as she looked at her hands. "I guess I need to tell someone since my own son had refused to listen to me. I know there's no excuse to justify my actions but I'll tell you all the same. "

Amanda took a huge drink from the bottle of chilled water on her desk. She then began her narration to Stella. Tears clung to her eyes as she did. In the end, she looked at Stella and asked, "I'm stupid right?"

Stella looked at her and shook her head. She then offered Amanda her handkerchief to whip her eyes. Amanda smiled as she took it. She removed a purple handkerchief from her bag, then gave it to Stella, gesturing for her to wipe her tears. Stella touched her eyes surprised. She never knew tears were in her eyes. She looked at Amanda and they both laughed. It felt so good to laugh.

Stella watched as Dave took his time in parking his car. She stood by the entrance, wondering why Dave was there. It had been a week since he left this place and she thought he would never step his feet in the boutique again. She didn't wait for him to come to her before she ran to him.
"I didn't expect to see you here."
"Yea. I didn't expect to see myself here too." He laughed. He seemed so easy going and in a good mood. Stella hoped his mood would last.
"I came to meet her. Is she in?"
"Yes she is Dave." Holding his hands, she looked deep into his eyes. "Are you okay?"
"Yes." Dave breathed. "I've been thinking a lot and I think this is what I should do. Don't worry." Dave placed his palms on her cheeks and Stella nodded at him. She led him to Amanda's office and on getting to the door, she hugged him and left. Dave exhaled. He wasn't sure if he was actually right but he couldn't think about anything else other than this. He knocked lightly on the door and waited patiently for a reply.
"It's Dave."
