Amara woke up and sit up straight in her bamboo bed looking confused.
Queen Amara: (Speaking aloud to herself) What does Mother meant by him ruining our plans? By the way, who is he and how will he destroy our plans? ( Hit her braided hair designed with different beads three times and stop) No, I won’t sit back and watch this unknown man destroy where I am already seated (With a determined look) It is now time to do what brings me here.
She didn’t sleep a wink all through the night until the cock crows the following morning. She has cleverly drafting out her plans.
Queen Amara: (Hitting her chest to signify her next words) No one can stop me.
Ikenga was the first person to wake up early the next morning. He came out of his hut and look around him, the compound looks as if it has never been swept for days, with just a wave of his right hand, the compound of the old hunter became clean as if it has been swept.
The hut of the old hunter opened and he stepped out and was surprised to see Ikenga and his neatest of his compound. He was holding a bow and arrows and was dressed in his hunting attire. He was holding the dead grasshopper in his other free hand. Her had cut open and clean the guts of the grasshopper the previous night.
Ikenga: (Wasn’t surprise on seeing him) Good morning Papa.
Old Hunter: Morning my son, you are already awake and swept the compound.
Ikenga: Yes Papa.
Old Hunter: Daalu (Thank you) you have done well.
Ikenga: I should be the one thanking you Papa and not the other way round, you gave me a place to rest my head, you gave me, a stranger you don’t know, a home to call his own. Whatever I do here just know it’s my gratitude to you for your kindness.
Old Hunter: (Pleased with his words) Alright my son. I am going for hunting now and will want you to take care of the compound until I return.
Ikenga: Okay Papa, I will.
The old hunter left.
Ikenga went to the kitchen and saw empty three pots and with a snap of his fingers, magically, the pots were filled with water.
He saw there was nothing else for him to do so he decided to have his bath and still wear the same clothes. He entered his hut given to him by the old hunter and went to lie down on the bamboo bed and slept off.
It was towards the afternoon when he heard the approaching footsteps of the old hunter and he get down from his bamboo bed and went outside to wait for him. He didn’t have to wait for long when he saw the old hunter entering the compound with some bundles of wrappers.
Ikenga: Papa you are back.
Old Hunter: Yes my son (He gave the wrappers to Ikenga who bore a surprised look) this is for you. I bought it for you Ikenga, you don’t have to look so different anymore with your attire.
Ikenga: (Collecting it with a smile and went inside the hut to keep the wrappers before coming outside again) Thank you Papa, how do you buy those wrappers?
Old Hunter: I sold my grasshopper and decided to buy you wrappers.
Ikenga: Oh, thank you once again Papa.
Old Hunter: You are welcome.
Ikenga: Did you not catch any game today?
Old Hunter: (With a crestfallen face) No I did not, it seems they ran away and went into hiding, even my traps could not even catch any.
Ikenga: I see, wait here papa, I will be back (he collected from the bow and arrows from the old hunter and started to go but was stopped by the old man’s voice)
Old Hunter: And where are you going my son?
Ikenga: To catch and bring you an animal Papa.
Old Hunter: You don’t have to my son, probably the forest has warn the animals about me.
Ikenga: Let me go and check for myself papa. (He left immediately.)
Old Hunter: But you don’t even know anywhere around Ikenga (Ikenga has long gone. The old hunter lifted up his hands to the sky) I hope the gods favour you.

Queen Amara entered Jidenna’s hut and smiled when she saw his condition.
Queen Amara: I warned you didn’t i, but did you listen? No. You will remain here all your life, until you are old and you die. The more your father tries to look for a solution to your problem, the more I increase it. No one will save you Jidenna you will rot and die. (She brought out a sharp knife she has hidden in her wrapper and used it to tear his arm open a little. The knife she uses on him absorb his blood turning the shining stainless knife into bloody red knife, once she was through, the cut closes by itself) thank you Jidenna for lending me your blood. (She left his hut, hidding the knife)
Entering her hut, she locked the door and brought out the calabash. She brought out the knife from her wrapper and whispered some words, the blood inside the knife started dropping until the once red knife was back to its original colour. For her to succeed in causing havoc in Ogidi village, she must used the blood of her son.
Queen Amara: (Seated on the bare ground with the calabash on her legs, started saying some incantations and the once empty calabash started bringing out dark smoke from it.) I, the daughter of Queen Ziza command you to rise and destroy the peace of Ogi- (Someone interrupted her by knocking on her door. She stopped and stared angrily at the door, whoever it is has just spoiled her incantations, it can’t be continued until another day. Standing up from the ground, she opened the door hoping it is Cheta so she could take all her anger on her but it was Adapuruche.) What is it Ada?
Adapuruche: Father has sent for your presence immediately mother. (She left)
Queen Amara: (Speaking slowly to her earrings) Ofordili, you are lucky today but you won’t be tomorrow.
She went to answer her husband.

The old hunter slowly stood up from his stool when he saw Ikenga approaching his compound, his eyes widened in shock.
Ikenga entered the compound and drop two dead antelopes at the feet of the old man.
Ikenga: Papa, the antelopes are yours.
Old Hunter: (Still surprised) Ikenga, are these for me? Only me?
Ikenga: Yes Papa, do you want more? I can get more for you.
Old Hunter: No my son, this is enough. But how did you kill not just one antelope but two? And you never told me you are a Hunter yourself.
Ikenga: (Smiling sheepishly) I didn’t want to disclose that I am a Hunter and I also went to Mbada forest and these two weren’t fast enough to escape my sharp arrows.
Old Hunter: (in wonder) Mbada forest? No one has entered the forest before and come out alive. It is impossible my son, unless you have the backing of the gods.
Ikenga: Maybe I am too special to the gods Papa. But the antelopes are yours Papa, you can kill it, sell it or do whatever you want with it.
Old Hunter: I will sell some and use the remaining ones to eat. In fact let me go and prepare a delicious delicacy with this antelopes you’ve caught.
Ikenga bend down and pick the two antelopes with ease and took them to the kitchen.
Old Hunter: This is strange, he didn’t even stagger when he carries the two antelopes at once.
Ikenga: (Coming to meet the old man) Papa they are in the kitchen, I will cut it and clean up the antelopes for you. And from now henceforth I will be going hunting for you papa.
Old Hunter: The gods are truly with you my son, maybe they are trying to tell me it’s time to retire and sent you to me. You can go to the kitchen and once you are through, call me let me take it up from there.
Ikenga left….
Old Hunter: (To himself) He is a strange man, a strange man who seem to have the backing of the gods and I am glad to have him with me.
The Next Day…..
The River of Ogidi village has two paths that leads to it. You can use any of the two paths to go to the river and the paths are being separated by a thick bush.
Cheta has filled up her water pot from the river and followed one of the path that leads straight to the palace.
At the other path coming towards the river was Ikenga in the old man hunting robes.
He came to the river to quench his taste and see if he could find his unknown maiden.
He stopped when the scent of his maiden filled his nostrils. He ran and stopped at the bank of the river searching everywhere.
Ikenga: She was here (Smiling to himself) My maiden was here.
He sniff the air and started following the second path. He broke into a run, he has to meet up with his unknown maiden that has set him free before she escapes.
Cheta saw Adapuruche and her maids and greeted her.
Adapuruche; (To her maids) Don’t you know how to greet my sister or are you all blind? (The maids greeted Cheta)
Cheta: (Nearing and touching Adapuruche on her shoulder) Where are you headed this early morning sister?
Adapuruche: I am going to the river Cheta, will see you soon. (And gave Cheta a hug. Once they see themselves outside the Palace and out of the Queen Amara’s gaze, they always make some contact with each other.)
Cheta: Okay sister (She continue her way)
Adapuruche and her maids continue their walk to the river and stopped when she saw him.
Ikenga nearly ran into Adapuruche and stopped himself from crashing into her. The scent becomes stronger.
He sniffs the air and went around the princess in slow circle and stopped in front of her with a happy smile.
Adapuruche and her maids were too surprised to move, the strange hunter before them was very handsome and he took their breaths away.
Ikenga: You…You are my maiden.

Igwe Ofordili: (Heaved out a sign) She committed a great scarillage to me and my family and also to the people of this great village. The gods know best. (Gesturing with his right hand that holds his offor) Ebuka you and some guards should take the dead body of my wife and throw her into the evil forest, she won’t be buried in the normal way as tradition demand. (Ebuka with four other guards went inside the hut and came out with Queen Amara’s lifeless body. A black sword, the one she uses on Jidenna, was seen struck inside her heart. The guards left for the evil Forest. As soon as they were out of sight Igwe Ofordili returned his gaze to queen Amaka sorrowfully and apologized once again.) I am so sorry Amaka
Queen Amaka: Like I said before, I have forgiven you. (No sooner as she omitted those words, the great Chief Priest appeared in their midst.)
Great Chief Priest: (Igwe Ofordili surprised to see him) Now your eyes are more clearer Ofordili.
Igwe Ofordili: Yes great one, I could have killed an innocent child years ago if not for your intervention, I could have also killed my wife Amaka if not for the birds who came and took her away. I was blind and didn’t know my wife Amara was behind it. I thank the gods for unveiling the truth.
Great Chief Priest: (Nods his head) You’ve seen the reason why I had stopped you from killing Cheta. (He faces Cheta and saw Ikenga. He started praising the god. He stopped and faces Ofordili.) You should be happy that you have someone like him (pointing at Ikenga) as your son in-law. (He vanished.)
Nganga: My daughter and I will stay here until Cheta finally gets married to Ikenga.
Igwe Ofordili: Well In that case (He called the maids and told them to prepare a hut for his visitor.)
Nganga: (Stopping the maids) Don’t bother yourself, we will be staying in the hut Cheta stays.
Igwe Ofordili: I have no problem with that. (Ebuka and the other four guards returned.)
Ebuka: (Bowing his head down) We’ve thrown her dead body into the forest.
Igwe Ofordili: Hmm, I will have to inform all my elders everything that happened, those that kill by the sword, dies by the sword. I hope ChukwuOkike forgives her.
Queen Ziza who had watched everything only shook her head.
Queen Ziza: I gave my daughter a choice and she chooses to end her life. I am not at ffault
9 Days Later….
(The traditional marriage of Ikenga and Cheta went successful and just like amadioha promised, he and the rest of his brothers came. Agwusi didn’t come as promised. Once they have sealed their marriage, Nganga blessed Cheta home and left together with her daughter.)
Later that night in Igwe Ofordili Palace…
Ikenga was outside the hut he shared with Cheta when Agwusi and the old hunter appeared in front of him..
Ikenga: You told me you would attend my marriage with Cheta today but you didn’t.
Agwusi: I was busy with something else, sorry for not coming. So where is amadioha? Remember if you want to see that friend of mine, you have to show me amadioha and I will bring you to him.
Ikenga: Well like you disappoint me earlier today so did I Agwusi.
Old Hunter: Meaning?
Ikenga: I wasn’t talking to you or is your name now Agwusi?
Agwusi: Forget about what he said, how do you mean?
Ikenga: Firstly, Amadioha is not here with me, and secondly I knew you were lying and decided to play along.
Old Hunter: (In an angry tone) You deceived my master.
Ikenga: If he says another word in this matter that doesn’t concern him, his head will follow.
Agwusi: Udele do not say another word. So you were pretending all along?
Ikenga: Yes, Amadioha won’t lie because if he did Nganga wouldn’t have allowed me to get married to her granddaughter and plus he is married to Ala. (Closing his eyes and opening it.) You think you are more clever and cunning but you are not. Anyway I haven’t told Amadioha about what you told me nor what you said for me to have him killed. We are brothers Agwusi and I cannot fight you or any one of them.
Agwusi: (in great anger) You are good at playing along, I must recommend you at that. But this isn’t the end, I will be back for you Ikenga.
Ikenga: And I will be waiting to say my greetings.
(Agwusi and the old Hunter disappeared.)
Days Later….
Jidenna was crowned the King of Ogidi Village and Cheta left with Ikenga to live amongst the gods.
Adapuruche was in her hut thinking about her life.
Adapuruche: (Talking to herself) So this is the end, I won’t have Ikenga. What is the essence of me having these powers given to me by my mother who is no more and still yet I won’t have what I yearn for? I have lost Ikenga to my sister Cheta. Now I have realised no one is born ugly. (She started crying, covering her mouth to conceal any noise. She lives the rest of her life in regrets.)

fordili: (In an angry tone) Ebuka! (The guard knelt down before Igwe Ofordili and the Igwe said commandly) Go and bring me my wife from her hut and if she fails to come with you drag her and come outside.
Ikenga: Permit me to go with Ebuka to bring out your wife.
Igwe Ofordili: You can go with him Ikenga.
(Ikenga and Ebuka went and entered Queen Amara hut and saw her about to carry her calabash.)
Queen Amara: (Shocked seeing the guard with Ikenga but pretends and hide her shock, dropping her calabash with care on the ground and faces Ebuka, still breathing heavily.) Yes Ebuka, why did you barge into my hut without knocking, what gave you the impetus to do so?
Ebuka: I am sorry my Queen but I was ordered by the king to come to your hut.
Queen Amara: What for?
Ikenga: Don’t give that pretentious look Amara, you and I know that you know, come with the guard at once and do not try anything funny, remember what my brother did to you, mine will be worse.
Ebuka: And Igwe orders that if you refuse to comply that I am permitted to use force on you.
(Queen Amara was stranded now, if she disappears she is sure Amadioha is watching her movements and Ikenga might do something stupid. If she tells the guard to go that she is coming, Ikenga will refuse to leave. Seeing there is no other way of escaping, she agrees.)
Queen Amara: Alright, lead the way Ebuka. (Ebuka turned and left the room followed by Queen Amara and lastly Ikenga. Stepping outside the hut, Queen Amara bowed her head in shame as she approached Igwe Ofordili. Stopping as she faces him.) You sent for me.
Igwe Ofordili: Yes I did Amara, there is something Jidenna just said and Ikenga here, Cheta’s husband to be, confirmed it also. Is it true you made your own son you carried in your womb for good nine moons imbecile? (Queen Amara started crying) Is it true you made my second daughter, Cheta, ugly? (Queen Amara cries increases the more) And also the beast that killed those innocent villagers.
Queen Amara: It is true Ofordili, I made Cheta ugly with the help of my mother (Everyone present except Ikenga and Adapuruche exclaimed in surprise) I was also the one who had turned my son to an imbecile for constantly talking to Cheta after my series of warnings to him. I also summoned the beast which ikenga killed.
Igwe Ofordili: Why did you do it? What was Cheta’s, Jidenna and those innocent villagers offence? What did they do to you Amara?
Queen Amara: I did it for revenge Ofordili.
Igwe Ofordili: What revenge are you talking about Amara? Who offended you?
Queen Amara: You Ofordili are the reason why I did all these. I made Amaka barren so you can marry me for me to carry out my revenge.
Igwe Ofordili: Again I ask, why Amara?
Queen Amara: Because of the two giants you had killed years back. One was my brother and the other one was my husband. So I vowed to have my revenge on you.
Igwe Ofordili: (Eyes widen in shock as he heard Amara.) Wait Amara, are you trying to tell us that you are a giant?
Queen Amara: Yes Ofordili, i am not just any giant, i am the princess and my mother is the Queen of all giants.
Igwe Ofordili: (He turned his gaze at Ikenga and remembered what the young man had told him) Now I get why Ikenga had said he saw you with a giant head.
Queen Amara: You caused all these, if you had apologized to my people when we appeared in your dream all these wouldn’t have happened.
Igwe Ofordili: I know I did wrong but must Jidenna, Cheta and those innocent souls cost by one man paid for a crime they didn’t commit Amara?
Queen Amara: I was blinded by anger and vow to take whoever that is related to you. I am sorry Ofordili. (She kneels down and face Cheta and Jidenna) Please Cheta find a place in your heart to forgive me and you Jidenna, I am sorry for all the pains I had cost you since your birth. I did that out of ignorance, please forgive me my son.
Jidenna: If i am your son as you said you wouldn’t have put me in so much pain mother, but to err is human to forgive is divine, if ChukwuOkike can forgive who am I not to forgive you, I have forgiven you mother.
Cheta: Me too mother, I have forgiven you for everything you did to me. If it weren’t for those things you did I wouldn’t have met my love Ikenga.
Queen Amara: Thank you Cheta, thank you Jidenna. (Queen Amaka and her mother flew into their midst and changed into their human form. Everyone except Cheta, Amara and Ikenga shifted back a little.)
Igwe Ofordili: (cleaning his eyes to be sure he saw right) Amaka!!
Queen Amaka: Yes the one and only. (Cheta ran to meet her and hug her.)
Cheta: Mother you came back as promised, I have a lot to tell you.
Queen Amaka: If it is what happened, I and your grandmother (pointing at Nganga who cheta is seeing for the first time) saw everything. (She faces Queen Amara) Amara, it was after my mother saved me that I got to know you are behind everything, you’ve seen where your wickedness has landed you.
Queen Amara: (Breathing heavily and faster, no one cares to ask her what’s wrong with her) I am sorry Amaka for everything I did to you, I hope you have forgiven me.
Queen Amaka: I will try and forgive but I won’t forget the scars Amara. (She faces Jidenna and smiled at him prompting him to run to her and hug her.) My son, I have missed you. (Queen Amara quietly left their presence and went back into her hut in shame. No one took notice of her absence.)
Jidenna: Nne, I have missed you too, Cheta has been there for me and I am grateful to that.
Igwe Ofordili: Amaka how can I ask for your forgiveness?
Queen Amaka: I have already forgiven you Ofordili.
Igwe Ofordili: Thank you.
Nganga: (Facing Ikenga and speaks for the first time she got there.) Ikenga I saw your bravery and I am proud that Cheta will end up with you. You have my full support and I have forgotten about the past, let’s embrace the present and future that awaits us all.
Ikenga: Thank you Nganga. I appreciate and my love for Cheta will never ever fade. (The scream of Queen Amara caught their attention and Ebuka ran into her hut. Taking a deep breath as he looks at the sky.) Queen Amara has taken her own life, she killed herself.
Ebuka came out of the hut and confirmed what Ikenga said.
Ebuka: (Kneeling down before Igwe Ofordili) Your Highness, the Queen stabbed herself. She is dead.

Queen Amara: Now I know why I couldn’t help but do as he says. Please mother try to remove what he put on me, I won’t trouble Cheta or force Adapuruche on Ikenga again. (Bending half way in pain) Please mother, remove what he did to me.
Queen Ziza: Were you deaf when I said I can’t cure what I don’t know? You brought this on yourself after I told you not to interfere but you paid deaf ears to my warnings Amara.
Queen Amara: Please help me now, I am begging you, I am your daughter.
Queen Ziza: I know you are my daughter (She closes her eyes and opens it after a minute has passed.) There is nothing I can do to help you Amara but the only thing I can help you with is for you to come back home and admit your failure to our people. Jidenna is whole again and so is Cheta, return home and save your face. Then I will see what I can do for whatever it is Amadioha may have placed on you.
Queen Amara: (Not knowing what to do nod her head like agama lizard, still breathing heavily.) Thank you mother, I will have to go back to Ofordili Palace and get my things and calabash and come back here.
Queen Ziza: I would have said you should leave that and follow me Amara but you must get the calabash it is very important.
Queen Amara: I know mother I will be back before you know it.
Quee Ziza: Amara, you better be fast about it because delay is dangerous.
(Queen Amara disappeared leaving her mother in the forest who disappeared afterwards.)
Cheta broke into a run and ran back to their midst.
Cheta: (In great happiness as she stares only on Ikenga.) Ikenga take a good look at my face, my scars are gone. They are gone and no more on my face. I look beautiful for the first time in my life.
Ikenga: (Smiling) Didn’t I tell you that you are beautiful when we met?
Cheta: Yes you did but I didn’t believe you until you told me of the enchanter. (Her smile widened more) you’ve seen whoever that casted it, right?
Ikenga: (Smiling) Hmmm, probably, but you are not the only one who got healed, turn around and look behind you to see for yourself.
Cheta: (Doing as Ikenga said, she turned around and her eyes met her father shock ones, then moved to Adapuruche bewilderment ones and finally, finally her gaze landed on Jidenna. Her eyes widened in surprise when she regards Jidenna from head to his toes.) Jidenna! Am I dreaming or not? Are you healed?
Jidenna: Cheta Nwanne mu, I am now healed. (Cheta gave a loud shout of joy and ran into Jidenna’s awaiting open arms and embraced her brother.)
Cheta: (When they release the tight hold on each other, Cheta beamed in happiness) Thank the gods you are alright now, which means my mother was innocent of the crime laid on her years back.
Jidenna: She is Cheta.
Igwe Ofordili: How do you mean Queen Amaka is innocent? Didn’t you eat from the food she gave to you?
Jidenna: I did but the one who had turned me into an Imbecile and and made my sister, Cheta ugly is no other than my mother, Queen Amara. (The maids, palace guards and Igwe Ofordili exclaimed loudly in a surprised tone. Everyone was shocked except Adapuruche. Jidenna continues.) She normally comes to my hut and takes some of my blood which I don’t know what she uses it for.(he showed his father the knife marks on his arms and continues.) The last one she did was to come into my hut today and cut off my little toe. (He showed his father his legs that were missing a toe.) With all this evidence I believe mother would be the one to have afflicted Cheta with those ugly scars and made me imbecile.
Igwe Ofordili: This is unbelievable, I can’t believe my own wife would do such a thing to Cheta and to her own son, my son.
Ikenga: Igwe, to be truthfully, it was indeed your wife who had given my beautiful Cheta her ugly face and made your son Jidenna imbecile. To be more Frank with you Igwe, your wife, the Queen of Ogidi village was the one who had summoned the beast that I had killed and brought to you.
(At that moment Queen Amara appeared in her hut.)
Igwe Ofordili: (To Ebuka) Go and call me Amara right now.
Bird Kingdom:
Nganga: Shouldn’t it be the right time for us to make our appearance known to them my daughter?
Queen Amaka: You are so correct mother, let’s pay a visit to Ofordili.
(They both changed into a white eagle and flew away.)
Agwusi: (Who was watching what was happening in the Palace of Igwe Ofordili and turned to look at the man who was standing beside him and watching the whole drama.) Cheta has regain her beauty my friend
Ekwensu: I know Agwusi, you will bring Ikenga and Cheta to me.
Agwusi: You’ve forgotten Amadioha my friend, Ikenga will bring him along when he comes for his marriage.
Ekwensu: Let’s wait till then, I have these strange feelings that something will happen that day.
